It looks like the Telluride is on the Sorento platform (just like the concept previewed) and will also be built in the Georgia plant alongside it’s little-older brother. The Theta II 2.0t (235-245 hp / 260 lb-ft) will probably be the base engine and pricing will likely come out identical to the Stinger range ($32,000 through $50,000).
The 2.2t diesel (~200 hp / 310 lb-ft) is confirmed for the US in the new Santa Fe and the Kia Sorento is supposed to get it as well. I haven’t seen any word on the mild-hybrid system at the moment, but that would allow for an idle-less diesel engine. If there isn’t an electric motor between the engine and the transmission then consider the mild-hybrid as an awesome engine start-stop system rather than a “hybrid.”
All of this helps the case for diesels in the upcoming Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. The business reasoning is great fuel economy numbers for marketing, it spreads out the cost of these new diesel engines that were developed for Europe right as Europe shuts them out. Most of all, it forces the models to be compared to Land Rover offerings rather than Highlander, Ascent, and Atlas. That’s how you market value, win comparison tests, and move a brand upmarket, kin.
Kia may offer the Lambda II 3.3L V6 (290 hp / 260 lb-ft) ssimply to offer a “V6" option for the segment. The Theta III 2.5t (280 hp / ~300 lb-ft) is coming soon and will eventually replace the 3.3L V6.
Though the Telluride uses cues from the Mohave/Borrego, the Telluride does not replace it. The Mohave is still being sold in the Middle East and East Asia. It’s a body-on-frame, 4x4, V8 compatible SUV.
The Telluride and Palisade will be focused on the North American market while the upcoming truck-based SUVs will be set up for the Eastern markets.
By the way, the Santa Cruz Pickup is speculated to be built in the US alongside the next generation Hyundai Tucson. There is also a midsized truck being developed for the same markets as the BOF utilities.
There also seems to be two coupe models coming, one for Genesis (between the G70 and G80) and one with Hyundai N Performance which I’m fairly certain will be similar to the Kia GT4 Stinger Concept. Just imagine the GT4 with production lighting (and grille) like the Palisade prototype.

I really digged the concept, but this one is shaping up to look like a 2000's GM mash of vehicles.
I mean, it’s nothing they can’t fix with the Lambda II engine.

50 thousand dollar kia SUV? Might as well just kill the project, you could spend 50 grand much better than on a damn Kia suv.

I’d have expected a Chinese company rather than a Korean one to copy the XC90, cool.

They kept pretty much every cue but unfortunately the headlights didn’t make it which throws off the front end for me. It still looks like a GMC competitor which is upmarket, I guess. Kia has been giving me pancakes when I w ant w affles. Good enough to eat but not what I’m hungry for.

Lambda III is coming soon! A 3.5t V6 (~400 hp / 400+ lb-ft) that should replace the current Tau V8. Don't know about the F/AWD cars though.

Counterpoint:Kia makes good, competitive cars. You shouldn’t disqualify it just because “It’s a Kia”

Still need $1,800 to add on AWD! This must be what the Depression felt like. Dark times, dark times.

Oh, great! more displacement.I wondered how they’d squeeze more power out of those poor turbos. On the other hand, I saw the photo you uploaded of the Telluride front end... it does look too much like a GMC.

It definitely favors, though the XC90 is an incredibly anonymous and generic design when you go over it . The headlamps, however, are one of the greatest design cues in automotive history! They are up there with the Nike Swoosh in terms of branding .

I wonder what it would look like if the XC90 didn’t exist.
On the Volvo, spring for the hammer , the base model without it screams “cheap bastard” (or rental).
Lexus agrees with the Nike swoosh.

I actually disagree with that, I think that disqualifying something because, “It’s an X,” is a valid answer. That is an issue with the “breadth” of branding. If I told you that Clorox was selling a line of b aby f ormula, would you even consider trying the product? All the reviews say it’s fantastic, industry leading and priced to win ! But would you give a baby Clorox branded food?

Halogens are a no-cost option in the US, actually. Thor’s hammer is standard on even the base Momentum T5 FWD. People actually go out of their way to not get them, it’s wild.

I mean, Clorox does sell food, but it’s besides the point. Brands have a right to evolve, and they do rather often! I think it’s shortsighted to disqualify a brand based off some stereotype that has been disproven. I know that shaking off a bad image is difficult, but I think that a savvy buyers knows not to judge!
Edit:Reading your comment more carefully, I realise that your point is that Kia has a base and it’s trying to move too quickly to another one.

I didn’t know that, amusing. People voluntarily choose the less cool option, nice. Must be a Volvo thing, shun the fancy new tech.

Im not disqualifing it because I think it’ll be an awful 50k $ SUV, I think that it will preform awfully in a segmant dominated by bigger names that are body on frame, and again, why would a 50k $ Kia suv be great in the first place? It's not Kia's market or segment. They are moving into a luxury direction having made one partially successful luxury sedan

I think the Honda Pilot has had a good time in that very broad segment...

Yes because Honda has a history of being some of the worst cars ever imported and up until 2009 were totally disrespected at every turn.... Oh wait that was KIA, Honda is and has always been doing really well in America and has sold more cars that Kia has. Honda has also sold luxury cars for decades.

I’ve been thinking about these pictures for a few days and still feel very meh about this. I loved the concept, because it a big, boxy, and truckish looking. This looks too much like the crossover that it is. Not really sure why though. Maybe because the new front is less square.

The context has changed. When the c oncept premiered, it looked like a real SUV compared to the minivan-looking crossovers. Within 3 years, most of those crossovers gained SUV cues and now the Telluride just looks like another crossover. It’s a subtle change yet a huge change at the same time...

That’s a good point. And most SUV’s are now just amorphous blobs. So the market is changing. I still like tho old non-SRX/XT5/Tahoe lights better though lol
